The Army Corps to which the East Suffolks belonged received confirmation of the surrender and the armistice at about 5.45am. An excited aide burst into the Commanding General’s office waving the piece of paper. When the General told him to calm down he said simply. “It’s over sir”

The General took the signal, read it with the aid of his glasses and snapped back. “No it is not. Not until 11am man. The attack goes ahead. I want that bloody line straightened before we start any tomfoolery such as an armistice! This signal does not, repeat not, go out to the Divisional or Brigade HQs yet and most certainly not to Regimental HQs. Do you understand me?”

“Yes sir, but…..”

“No bloody buts Waters do you understand me? We have another five hours or so of War. We are going to make the most of it! Now get out and get my breakfast organised!”

The aide went outside into the corridor and slumped against the wall with the signal firmly in his mind. It was over. He shook his head. The Commanding General must be completely mad. He went off to do as he was ordered.
